Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 2003-2004 school year! With every teacher there are different policies within their classrooms. The following will clarify the different policies that I use.
HOMEWORK
Students should study spelling and vocabulary words nightly. They should also read every night on their library book. Study Wednesday nights for our Language Arts tests!
ABSENTEES
When absent, I provide the student with a homework packet that includes everything they missed. This will need to be returned to me completed.
Example of time frame to return makeup work:
Missed 1 day - will have 1 day to complete work
Missed 2 days - will have 2 days to complete work
Make up work turned in late will result in points off their grade.
**Please let me know of special circumstances.
I will work with you on these.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline will be stressed. I believe that all of the students can behave appropriately in the classroom. I do not tolerate any student keeping me from teaching or others from learning. I run a relaxed classroom, so it's not hard to keep with the rules. I don't anticipate any problems. Sometimes problems just arise from miscommunication or misinterpreted situations. So, please contact me as soon as needed on discipline issues. I will also need your support in return if any problems arise in the classroom. Please refer to the fifth grade discipline plan in this site.
SPELLING
Students should study their spelling list every night. Students will receive their spelling list on Friday. The test will be on Thursday. During short weeks, test will be on Wednesday or there will be no test at all.
READING
Most big projects will be completed in the classroom, but some projects will need to be completed at home. Homework will consists of reading trade books, chapter books, and their reader. Students will also have test preperation activities for homework. Please work with your child on these activities. This will help them be better prepared for the Achievement Test in April. Students are tested over there vocabulary words and comprehension from the story in their reader on Thursdays.
WRITING
Students will be writing daily in a journal. They will have a large writing assignment every 5 or 6 weeks. Your child will be tested over their writing skills in February.
LANGUAGE
Grammar will be intergrated with the reading and writing. Students will be quized weekly on daily language skills. Listening is the key! We go over the quiz everyday, and then take that quiz on Thursday. It's easy. Just listen. Occasionally there will be homework in grammar, but not very often.
PROGRESS REPORTS
I will be sending home progress reports at different times in the year. It will depend on the needs of the reports. I do this so you know where your child is at and this eliminates any surprises.
A child benefits more if we, teachers and parents, can work together as a "team." I will be communicating with you often through a monthly newsletter and this website about my classroom plans, your child's progress, school events and other activities as they arise. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you might have. You can contact me at the school between 10:05 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. I want to thank you now for your patience and support for this school year. I am dedicated to making this a busy, productive and terrific year for all of my students, as I know you are too for your child.
We are having a GREAT YEAR!
Sincerely,
Kay Boatwright
